e.g on the handles of exercise bikes and treadmills. Is it really very accurate to measure your heart rate through your hands?

well it kinda depends on which machine you are using, because if the exercise machine is more modern than it is most likely to be more accurate.
look up the machine on line, and some people can comment on how they liked the machine, and the accuracy of measuring your heart rate.
i have a tread mill and it works really good, and i should probably use it more often because soccer is coming up soon!
unfortunately not really..
but you can get a heart rate monitor and wear it. sometimes those work with the machines at the gym. those would be more accurate, but also more pricey.
